Notes On Job

Ch.1

1.  Before mention of Abraham , three names stand out: Noah, Job and Enoch - another righteous man, who walked uprightly.

Unlike Enoch, Job will not be taken by the LORD; For another, entirely different destiny has been written for this righteous man...a much harder destiny; but just like Enoch, Job’s story will provide us us an important arrow pointing forward towards the fulfillment of Genesis 3:16

Two righteous men; two entirely different destinies: but the same LORD and serving the same divine purpose.

2-3. By all accounts, we do not know what earthly possessions Enoch had before the LORD “took him”, but Job is clearly prosperous...and, as we shall shortly see, his worldly prosperity does not appear to distract, diminish or contaminate his holy and reverential fear of the Lord, and his desire towards Him.

5. Following the precedent laid down by the Lord Himself, in Genesis 3:21, and then, by righteous Abel in Genesis 4:4.

What does this tell us, except that, those who are righteous, must first recognize themselves as sinners, needing forgiveness from a Holy Creator God.

Looking again at Genes3:21: Compare the Lord’s actions on behalf of Adam and Eve, with Job’s actions on behalf of his children. What an incredible foreshadowing of what Jesus Christ will one day do for all of us: Hebrews 10;  Romans 6:10

Thus Job did continually

7. It is strange to think of this all happening so early on in time - when the “sons of God” saw that the daughters of men were beautiful.” Was this already happening at this point? We do not know how far evil has progressed. Job has already returned to dust before the finishing of Noah’s Ark, when evil will have reached its tipping point, but from what we read here, Satan is already fully active on the earth - and so is evil. 

And here is where we find Job; at the foot of this unparalleled rise of evil - remaining righteous in all his ways - and yet, about to be tested by God.
